Defensive Load Flash and Bang

Anyone test their defensive loads for nighttime effect? I don't want a visual stun grenade type, but I do want approx. 1000fps with middle weight bullets in .357, 10mm, .44 and .45acp. Is the general trend a near max load faster powder - 231, 700x, bullseye, AA#5 - or do we step into the middle ranges - unique, 800x, AA#7, bluedot? Barrel lengths would be 4-6 inches. I have no facilities for night shooting and need guidance. Comparative noise levels on the unprotected ear would probably be interesting also.

Cal4D4,

I have done a fair amount of night time shooting to test for flash in 9x19 and 45 ACP. VV-N340 gives very high performance in these calibers and has unbelievably low flash (nearly zero). For example, AA#5 is a relatively low flash powder but VV-N340 has
about 1/20th the flash in 45 ACP. I recommend you try VV powders in all your calibers. It also leaves very little residue. It costs more per pound but you use less per round.

I have no advice on sound other than use a suppressor.

Good luck!
