German Social Democracy: The Erfurt Program, 1891

...
3. Education of all to bear arms. Militia in the place of the standing army. Decision by the popular representatives on questions of war and peace. Settlement of all international disputes by arbitration.

Imagine the horrors that would have been unleashed on the world if Germany had fallen to this commie agenda in 1891.

Yep, German Socialism was a benign influence on world events all right.

Wouldn't have mattered after the election of 1932. Hindenberg couldn't quite get enough votes because he was seen as "the lesser of evils" among a pretty sorry bunch. A good talker with a thin resume was able to make the most of it though.

So your point is that capitalism is bad and that a totatlitarian regime would not have emerged if they had gone the commie route?

You do realize of course that Hitler LOST that election right? Hindeburg was elected, Hitler was never elected, he siezed power.

Hindenburg 49.6 percent
Hitler 30.1 percent
Thaelmann 13.2 percent
Duesterberg 6.8 percent

AND he lost the run-off election (a +50% was required to win the office)

Hindenburg 53.0 percent
Hitler 36.8 percent
Thaelmann 10.2 percent

Hitler did NOT seize power, on January 30, 1933 Reichs President von Hindenburg appointed Hitler Chancellor, charged him with forming a government that could form a workable majority in the Reichstag to deal with
Germany's severe problems-Hindenburg had enough sense to realize that the
nation's problems could not be solved relying on Presidential decrees issued
under Article 48 of the Weimar Constitution. Hitler was legally appointed
Chancellor THEN he seized power. The best way to start a revolution is from
above.

Yes. You are correct that "Hindenburg could not quite get enough votes" indicates that I realize he lost. Thanks.
The ensuing mess and power grab meant whatever laws were on the books at that point were no longer relevent.
