Saw this come over the news yesterday...

The program was built on several goals that all center on teaching gun owners — or potential gun owners — how to safely and properly use, store and care for their weapons. The program is also set up to promote awareness of gun laws and provide citizens with the tools that help them become responsible gun owners.

The idea of the Where’s Your Gun program was born out of the police department’s lack of success with gun buyback programs. If a police department orchestrates a gun buyback program, it has to offer the guns collected to a licensed firearm dealer, and the lot will go to the highest bidder.

The article goes on to mention about using the NRA's Eddy Eagle program for children, but for the adults it mentions topics such as legal issues, gun safety, documenting the serial number, and proper gun safety. It doesnt go into a lot of details, mentioning its a "soft roll out," but perhaps this will be something positive for the firearm owners in the area.

I personally think this is a good direction to go in offering some level of basic safety classes, and discussion of the laws, to be available to the general public, instead of a "buy back". Perhaps if Danville PD has enough interest, then maybe other places might be interested in something similar.

So I was wondering if other firearm owners feel that having an education system like this instead of a "buy back" is a good change to see or not?

Also, just curious, beyond offering to willing educate firearm owners on the basics, what else would be preferable instead of a "buy back"?
