Cosmoline in stock...

I recently purchased an m44, and as with most Nagants it was covered in cosmoline. I steamed and brake cleaned it all off of the metal. I sanded the old finish off the stock, and i steamed it as well. If i carefully take a heat gun to the stock more comes out, but it's so little that if i take the heat gun away from the stock it instantly re-absorbs. It seems to be never ending. It doesn't ooze out nearly as much as it did but it still does. Can i stain my stock now, Or will really hot weather ruin my finish? What can i do to get the rest of the stuff out of the stock?

PS. The finish i was going to use is MinWax Polyshades Stain and Polyurethane. Will melting cosmoline permeate the polyurethane, or will it cause the finish to bubble?

IIWY, I'd try a substance known as "whiting". It's available from Brownell's, Midway USA and no doubt many others.

It's a powder which, when mixed with a solvent (usually acetone or mineral spirits) and brushed onto oil-soaked wood will "draw-out" and absorb oil, cosmoline, etc. as it dries.

Stockmakers and gunsmiths have used it for many decades.

Kitty litter and heat

If you can, put it in a bag with clumping kitty litter and leave it in the car, in the sun for a week, supposed to do wonders

Try GOJO hand cleaner. I used it on a Yugo sks and it is now very pleasant to use. I put it one kind of thick and left it out in the sun,rotating it and then washed it off after wiping most of the crusty crap off with old socks... Might have been my sons socks:)No more "ousing" of the cosmoline. Kyle

This is going to sound weird, but I have done it many times. Pressure washer does the trick. It will take it right out. Be careful not use a real high pressure nozzle.

Heard of wrapping it in old news papers, then in a black plastic bag in your car in the sun, but not the kitty litter! Why not? sounds like it might work better than the paper.
