Contender

My older style Contender will not ignite primers. All very light indents.

Not headspace as I have tried several different barrels.

Not hammer spring, installed new one.

Any one have a brilliant idea?

If you have the trigger adjustment set very light, the older contenders will tend to drop the transfer bar out of the way from just closing the barrel. If this seems the case, just back off the adjusting screw on the trigger and it should cure the problem. I have seen this problem numerous times but it's just a guess in your case trying to diagnose it from long distance.

Transfer bar

I'm sorry if I used the wrong term by referring to a transfer bar on a contender, as they don't have one in the traditional sense as we think of one such as on a Ruger revolver. I haven't been into a Contender for many years and I'm just guessing at the problems with this one, so please excuse me if my guess is all wet. If I remember right they actually refer to it as a safety.

Does your Contender have the slide bar safety mounted on the hammer? If it is pushed to the right, it will prevent the hammer from striking the firing pin.
