yes, but it depends on the situation. They also increase the flash and the noise. You do NOT want to pull a .454 comp'd handgun at night after waking up and have to use it. You might get 1 shot off before you're out of the fight.
in my experierence with compensators for example a 6" barreled Springfeild Armory 45acp there was zero recoil the only reason it moved was me jerking it in preparing it for recoil and on the effect of night blindness lower grain loads tend to not to make such a fash
I have a gun that is ported (springfield P9 Ultra Longslide in 40) and I have both a ported and an unported barrel. Switching between the two of them is a shock. Porting/comps work on a high pressure cartridge. They work amazingly well!
