If you were to whittle any collection of HANDGUNS down to 10, what would you say are the "must-haves?"

In no particular order:
1911 in a Commander sized frame - .45 ACP of course.
Browning HiPower - 9 mm
The above 2 are suitable for concealed carry, home defense, and range work.
J-frame .38 Special or .357 magnum, for when I need to conceal something small.
Browning Buckmark, or other .22 LR - ideal plinker.
A N-frame .44 Magnum, for hunting.
The other 5 are for fun guns.
But I could never let any of my babies go.

In my ultimate collection of handguns, I'd like at least one each of the following:

A 1911 by a good manufacturer (like Springfield, Kimber, or STI)
A Glock 17
A 4" barrelled .357 magnum revolver by a good manufacturer (Smith, Ruger, or Taurus)
A conceal-carry handgun in 9mm (a Glock 26 or a Kahr would fit this bill, as would the Rohrbaugh if it ever comes out)
A snubnose .38 Special for concealed carry (like one of the titanium Taurus models)
A .45 Colt Single Action revolver (Rugers are good)
A .44 caliber black powder revolver replica (the Remington 1858 is a good model).

That's about it, for me.

If this collection is more for the collecting than for the shooting here is my list (in no order).

1. Colt 1911 gov model

5. Glock 17
6. S&W 59

Collection or selection, a working battery or a representation of historical firearms.

My father has one.

a collection of firearms dateing from the 1700s with many different styles and dates represented. Most of them unshootable. Odd out of date ammo etc. As well as many limited edition colts. Don't turn that cylinder or cock that hammer!

Mine is a selection from the late 1800s to date. A pistol for every need I might have. All shooters.

I am partial to consecutive serial # pairs and .41 magnums though.

For the collectors category my top ten turned into a baker's dozen. No theme, ryme or reason just my pics.

1. French Charleville
2. Springfield Dragoon
3. My friend pepperbox
4. Allen & Thurber pepperbox
5. Colt 1851 Navy
6. Colt peacemaker
8. Smith & Wesson model #2 Army
9. Chicago Firearms protector lemon squeezer
10. My Friend Pepperbox
11. Luger
12. Webly & Scott RIC
13. Baby Nambu

The working battery collection

1. Colt 1911 - MK IV Government .45 ACP
2. Colt 1911 - MK IV Commander .45 ACP/38 Super
3. Colt Detective Special "old model"
4. Colt Peacemaker 2nd. Gen. .38 special
5. Colt Python
6. S&W md 58
7. S&W md 27
8. S&W K-38
9. S&W md. 39
10. S&W Bodyguard
11. Browning HighPower
12. Walther P-5
13. Ruger Mk1

I just couldn't get down to 10. Barely made it to 13. Could comptfortably get down to maybe fifty in the first category thirty in the second...maybe.

Cheers,

I refuse to entertain the thought of voluntarily giving up my collection... However in order to entertain the subject of the thread, these are the first 10 handguns I would buy if a fire or other natural disaster destroyed my current collection:

1. Ruger Redhawk .44 mag with 6 inch barrel. Stainless finish.
2. Glock 22
3. Ruger MK II with medium bull barrel. Stainless.
4. 1911 style .45 acp - don't know which I'd choose as yet...
5. Taurus 605 .357 Mag in stainless.
6. Sig Sauer P226 in 40 S&W
7. Freedom Arms 454 Casull with medium length barrel - Premium grade.
8. Contender so I could pick and choose barrels, calibers, etc.
9. NAA Guardian - possibly the 32/380
10. Desert Eagle .44 mag, just for the wow factor.

Ask again tomarrow and I'll probably have i different list...

To keep it simple here are the handgun calibers and types, you fill in your favorite brand:

1911 style .45 ACP
.357 revolver w/ 4"+ barrel
.38 snubnose revolver
.22 revolver
.22 semi-auto
9mm semi-auto
.44 mag revolver

To make it a full 10 just buy one extra from a different company in your top three favorite calibers.

As several have noted, this thread could have been more specific (though I assume you wanted to leave the interpretation to the individual here). If you mean the basics everyone should have, with a little creativity that could be whittled down to 3 or 4 (.22 plinker, which can be done with a conversion on a larger auto, full size 9mm or .45, 3" or 4" medium framed revolver in .38spl or .357mag, small auto and J-frame though one could go with either or of the last two). You could mean a dream list of 10, a collectors list of 10, or what of what you have and want to have are the 10 most important. I'll answer based on the last possible interpretation.

1) My S&W 586 (6" L-frame, .357mag)
2) My S&W 65LS (3" K-frame, .357mag), should I move to a CCW state this will be the perfect carry piece.
3) a good 1911 (I have a Charles Daly which I love, I also want a Springfield Armory- if I could only have one I'd probably go with the SA, but I would want to try it first for a while before deciding which to keep)
4) My CZ 75B (though with a limit, and if I had the cash I'd be happy to replace it with a CZ 75SA or CZ 85Combat).
5) J-frame or equivelent in .38spl
*6 and 7) A brace of .45lc SA revolvers (money no object- Colt SAA, money an object- either Cimmaron SAA clones or Ruger Vaqueros).
8) A small pocket sized auto (my Bersa .380 works fine for this, a 9mm Kahr may be nice or a smaller gun in .32acp would be nice as well). I'd probably want to go with the Kahr P9 or MP9 though to free up one spot for something else as this could also double as a belt gun in a decent caliber.
*9) A blackpowder revolver (I like my cheap brass framed 1858 Rem replica but I'd prefer one with a steel frame).
10) A nice medium frame .38 (I like my Colt Police Positive Special and I'd also like another Taurus 82, but with this limit I'd only be able to have one- probably a S&W M10, M14 or M15).

* I may be willing to forgo one of the SA revolvers or the blackpowder revolver (which one would depend upon my mood, and if I will get into Cowboy Action shooting) in order to add a compact, CCW IWB or Belt pistol if I moved to a CCW state (likely a SIG 239, CZ PCR/P01, Kahr K/P 9, or Taurus PT911).

Thank G-d this is only hypothetical. Hopefully, someday when I get married this won't end up being a real life choice. If I get everything I want I'll probably own 40-50 handguns or more before I'm done. If I want to limit it more (to save money) I can probably do it in 15-20 (and sell some if I decide I want something else more). But any less than 12-15 and I would have to make some compromises I really don't want to make.

Chaim, I AM married with a young daughter AND TAXES, plus the baby eats and needs clothes (did I tell mention babies need clothes??) So... I've got to pick and choose, now and in the future. I'd like to get a Colt SAA or black powder next, or the Ruger .22.

BMWGS80 (I take it you ride) -- why the 2nd gen. Peacemaker in .38 Special? Is this particulary collectible? Fond memories? Good combination of action and cartridge? And I like the pepperbox listings.I used to have one until I sold it to an antique firearms collector. Probably should have hung on to it.

The basics of a well-rounded handgun collection...

--A Wondernine.

--A 4" .357 wheelgun.

--A handgun in .22LR.

--A J-frame snubbie.

--A 1911.

--A big-bore SA revolver.

Everything on top of that is just gravy.
