One of the newest and most active anti-gun politicians to hit the national scene, Governor Bill Owens (R-Colorado), will be speaking at a public lecture at the Conservative Heritage Foundation on
Tuesday, February 29, 2000. It appears he is hiding his anti-gun views from his hosts. Then again he may not be hiding anything.
Many gun owners remember that in 1989 Heritage President Ed Feulner helped then President George Bush craft a ban on the importation of semi-automatic firearms.
You can attend this lecture and stand with your fellow gun owners in Colorado by saying: NO GUN CONTROL IN 2000.
Governor Owens is leading a pack of Colorado anti-gunners hoping to ram their gun control 2000 package through on the heels of the
Columbine shooting tragedy -- while emotions are still running high.

* OWENS IS CALLING FOR BRADY REGISTRATION OF PRIVATE SALES OF
GUNS AT GUN SHOWS. If you buy a gun at a so-called "gun show," Bill Owens wants Big Brother to know about it. This is the next major step towards a complete gun owner database.
Plus, anti-gun Democrats have already moved the goal line. They think gun show registration is a sure thing. Experts say the
Owens sell-out strategy may ensure ALL private sales are registered with Big Brother. If either passes, the anti-gunners win.
* OWENS WANTS EVERY GUN YOU HAVE TO BE VIRTUALLY USELESS WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST-- government-mandated LOCK UP YOUR SAFETY, the same type of legislation that Bill Clinton is pushing in Washington.
Anti-gun spinmeisters claim LOCK UP YOUR SAFETY programs will protect children from very rare accidental shootings. (Of course, many of the shootings they cite are not accidents, but crimes, and are not committed by children, but by 17, 18 and even 19 year olds).
Anti-gunners fail to mention guns are used by law-abiding citizens over 2 million times a year in lawful self-defense cases.
No murderer, burglar or rapist will wait for you to "unlock" your gun from "storage" or remove a "trigger-lock." And you and I both know the police may get there too late-- even if you have a chance to call the police.
If Burglar Protection legislation designed to force citizens to Lock Up You Safety passes you may have to choose between being defenseless or being fined thousands of dollars and/or go to jail.
* OWENS WANTS TO TAKE AWAY 2ND AMENDMENT RIGHTS FROM 18-21 YEAR
OLDS-- who are old enough to vote, serve in the military and die for our country.
* OWENS HELPS BUREAUCRATS ENACT GUN CONTROL. Last year-- and under the guise of "Home Rule"-- Bill Owens helped kill a State Preemption Bill banning local gun control. Basically this protects your 2nd Amendment rights from local infringement, just like your Right to Vote and your Freedom of Speech, Religion and Assembly are
protected.
* OWENS REFUSES TO SUPPORT COLORADANS RIGHT TO CARRY CONCEALED HANDGUNS FOR LAWFUL SELF-DEFENSE as the 2nd Amendment of the
Constitution allows.
* FINALLY, OWENS WANT TEACHERS AND STUDENTS TO BE DEFENSELESS TARGETS WHEN CRAZED CRIMINALS GO ON A RAMPAGE. They refuse to let teachers and parents protect children on school grounds by allowing
certain teachers and parents to carry a gun for school-defense.
The truth is, school No Safety Zones caused the epidemic of school and church shooting. Teachers, principals and parents used to be able to protect children from would-be murderers. But when Clinton, Congress and local politicians mandated School No Safety Zones (the so-called "Gun Free School Zones") criminals knew they
could target defenseless teachers and students.

Firearms are used for lawful self-defense over 2 MILLION times a
year. In response to Columbine, the criminal ctions of a handful of out-of-control kooks should not wipe out the Constitutional Rights
of millions of law-abiding gun owners in Colorado.
I urge Governor Owens to release his 1998 NRA Candidate Survey to the grassroots gun owners of Colorado so they can see what promises he broke. What promises did he make to get the support of the NRA
and the massive mailings in support of his election?
I respectfully ask you to tell Governor Owens to stop cutting back-room gun control "deals," to keep his pledge to push pro-gun bills and to renounce his GUN CONTROL 2000 agenda:
* Any LOCK UP YOUR SAFETY bill that would make my gun virtually
useless.
* Expanding BRADY REGISTRATION TO PRIVATE SALES at "gun shows."
* Letting local Bureaucrats enact gun control.

* instituting CBI-state Brady registration checks without legislative authority.

For the state of Colorado, April 20, 1999 will always be remembered as the day tragedy struck Columbine. As Americans asked, "How and why did this happen?" liberals screamed for stricter gun control and more metal detectors. Others, like Governor Bill Owens, looked deeper and saw the breakdown of the American family that started in the '60s as the more probable cause. He then asked Coloradans, "What can we as parents, as a community, and as a state do to prevent such
acts of violence in the future?"
Governor Owens believes that the solution to youth violence lies primarily with the family, but that the state can play a supporting role with programs that directly or indirectly strengthen families. His first initiative deals with providing every Colorado child with a safe and excellent education. This means creating drug-free and
crime-free schools through stricter standards of conduct, a values-based curriculum, and Alternate Charter Schools for high-risk and expelled students. It also means demanding higher academic standards and greater accountability. Other proposals of note include providing tax relief for families, limiting children's Internet access to harmful materials in public libraries, raising the age for purchasing handguns from 18 to 21, and encouraging
partnerships with faith-based organizations to provide a safety net for families in need.
In addition, Governor Owens created, by executive order, an Office of Families and Children charged with ensuring that Colorado State policy is always family friendly. Every action the state takes is measured against the impact of that action on the family. Will these measures become a model for other states? Can government decisions
affect the family for better or for worse, or perhaps not at all?
