Classic Military Style Rifles

I've noticed on older military rifles lets say Springfield .30-06. the butt plate has a little flap and is kind of tricky to get open on older guns. My question is what went in that cavity of the stock when they were in the field?

Hey, Dad... I didn't know you kept your condoms in there too. Makes me wonder what the grease cup was for. :D

Thats humorous, however I believe they used the condoms to keep rain, etc out of the barrel.

you wonder why they didnt make a "re-usable barrel protection device" i guess someone just has a sense of humor and issued condoms

The trap in the butt of the SMLE & No.4 Enfields held a pull-through (cleaning cord) & a brass oil bottle.

Well, the condoms are more durable than balloons and remember they were also meant to be fired through, so they needn't be too expensive. When you think about it, all in all, the condoms were a good solution to the problem.
