CCW - Glock 30 or 36 - opinions needed?

This may be like comparing apples to slightly bigger apples but I rented a Glock 30 today at the local range and was mildly surprised at the shootability of this little baddy. Accuracy was good, trigger was good, grip was a bit thick for my hands but still serviceable. Recoil was on par with my Kimber 1911, which is to say quite docile. I've not handled a G-36 but understand it is a slimmed down version of the 30 via single-stack magazine. I'm also assuming it will shoot in similar fashion to the 36. If by some miracle of the "gun gods" Ohio ever gets CCW I'd like to get one of these but I'm a little unsure of which to purchase. On the one hand the 30 offers more rounds. On the otherhand the 36 is narrower and lighter. Which would you go for when CCW is the driving factor?

Thanks to all,

Ohio huh,
Kick out that commie Taft, and a few of his socialist cronies. You might get somewhere.;) Ohio is a good place to be from, right now. (I'm FROM Dover/ New Philly)
If it does happen, get the G30. From what I have heard about the crime rate, you will need the 3 extra rounds.

I have....

....the G36. I've never shot the G30 so I really can't make a comparison but the G36 is 100% reliable, lighter, thinner and with an Alessi WSDT very easy to conceal. Recoil is a bit brisk so throwing on some Agrip is certainly helpful. I'm using ProLoad 185gr JHP.
6 + 1 will get it done!

I have no problems concealing my G30, when I'm wearing shorts and a t-shirt. I handled a G36, but just didn't like the feel. I also don't share the opinion that 6+1 will always get it done. Also like the fact that the G30 will accept G21 mags, which gives you a 13-rd mag as a spare.

I was all excited...

...about the G36 when it was first announced. By the time I actually saw one in the shop I worked at, my ardor had cooled considerably. To me, the double-column large capacity mag is as much a Glock hallmark as the polymer frame or lack of a manual safety. It's not that much thinner than a G30, and roughly the same size as a G23 or G19. .45 ACP is a swell round, but you'd have a hard time convincing me that 6+1 of .45 is more capable in any way than 13+1 of .40...

I just contacted Pearce Grip today about the finger extension for the 36. They stated that orders would be taken around the end of this month. An added bonus, it is a plus one extension, giving the shooter an extra round in the mag plus a little more to grip.
I shot both before I bought a 36. The only reason I did not buy a 30 is the money. The biggest difference I observed was the recoil in the 36, not bad, but you know it is a .45.

I posted my experience with the 36 v 30 a short while back. In case you missed it, I will insert it here.

I had a 30 and sold it for the 36. The 30 is a great gun if, and that is a big if, it fits your hand. The grip is fat and unless you have a big hand or long fingers, it may give you problems. My 30 would beat-up the first knuckle of my thumb pretty good. The first time I used it in an IDPA match this summer it drew blood from that knuckle. I realized that I needed a gun with a better fit FOR ME.

Handled the 36 and it fit MY hand/grip much better than the 30, so I bought it. The recoil/muzzle lift is more with the 36, it is noticeable, but it is not significantly more. I get a better grip on the 36 than I did the 30, so the extra bit of recoil is negated by the better grip. After the first range session, I put an Agrip on it and this thing is amazing. It is super thin and provids great traction. Any Glock I buy in the future will be adorned with the Agrip.

The 36 seems easier to conceal and much easier to wear all day for me compared to the 30. Would suggest you look at the Hume line of holsters at http://www.wrbss.com. Great holsters at great prices, and Bill from wrbss is great to deal with. Lastly, the 36 has 4 less rounds than the 30, and this is a consideration.

I would strongly suggest that you should shoot both before you buy. Best of luck in whichever you choose.

Frank

Last weekend at a dealer event I shot both the g30 and g36. I put 20 rounds of GI hardball throught each gun. The G30 is great. easy to handle, the recoil is softer than a Colt 45 auto and controllability is very good. The G36 was not so good. the recoil was a little snappier feeling and controlability was not as good as the G30. I think the problem with the G36 is the shape of the grip. If the back of the grip could be recontoured it would be better for my hand. If I had a G36 I would immediately put grip enhancers on it (A-grip, Handall). The G30 feels large in my hand but I found I can shoot it comfortablly with a single hand, I even put 5 round in target (accurate but slow) with my weak hand. In the Glock annual (previous edition) they list the G30 grip as 6.25" in diameter the G36 grip as 6.0" and the Colt government as 5.75" in diameter.
