Carrying a Rifle to Germany

To start, I did check a Model 94 Winchester .32 Special in my luggage on a 1996 trip to Germany. It was a gift for my cousin, a licensed hunter. "Armed" with a copy of his license, I declared the gun to customs. Opened the case for the inspectors, who were delighted to see a Winchester, less pleased to see my brother had packed a box of ammo with it. That got a finger shaking, but after they looked at the license, they shrugged, and off I went.

Now, more cousins (foresters and hunters), another visit, and 2 more vintage Winchesters. Anyone done this lately? I'm wondering if I can have a US FFL ship them to a counterpart in Germany. The NRA site was no help. What can you tell me?

My uninformed opinion is it would be a nightmare....

probably easier to carry it (checked) than try and ship unescorted... but I could be wrong. Let us know what you find out....
