Can someone help me put a date on my S&W 586?

I just bought a nickel Smith and Wesson 586 no dash with wood grips from a gun shop for $647. I want to know how old it was and/or when it was made. I have the serial number, but I don't know how much of it I have to disclose. It's a 3 letter, 4 digit SN.

Just the 3 letters will be enough to date it. No-dash 586s were made from 1981 to 1985. You should also check for an "M" stamped in the yoke cutout, which indicates it has had the firing pin and bushing problem corrected. You may or may not choose to have that done, but you should at least know if it hasn't had it.

ABT would make it 1983.

I have one from '83 and another from '85, both blued. They're among my most favorite revolvers, and I'll probably get a couple more if I can find them at the right price.
