Police say attacker violated restraining order, assaulted ex-wife over the weekend.
A 30-year old man was shot to death early this morning after he broke into the Laguna Hills home of his former wife and assaulted her parents and boyfriend with a hatchet, the Orange County Sheriff reported.
The incident occurred about 1 a.m. at 25091 Champlain Rd., said Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.
The former husband had violated a court restraining order by assaulting his wife over the weekend, Amormino said. He was arrested but was later released on bail.
Amormino said that the suspect broke into the home on this morning and tried to force his 10-year old daughter to drink a caustic liquid. The liquid is being tested to determine what it is, he said.
The youngster's grandmother and grandfather came to her aid and their former son-in-law hit them with a hatchet. The grandfather retrieved a handgun and fired at the suspect but missed. The suspect then went after the older man, said Amormino.
The ex-wife's boyfriend then came to the aid of the grandfather but the ex-husband hit him with the hatchet. The boyfriend grabbed a shotgun and fired once, hitting the ex-husband in the upper torso and killing him.
The three people hit with the hatchet were taken to Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills. There condition was unknown. The 10-year old was unharmed.
Amormino said that the identity of the suspect is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.
I'd say his 'next of kin' are probably pretty well aware, since he just tried to kill them.....
