Buying/shipping from other country

Advanced Search, Legal and Library and FAQs not much help here - amazingly--at least with the 72 different combinations I gave all these!! Basic question: rule(s) regarding purchasing a rifle from out of country (New Zealand for instance)--from here/internet: 1) Yes or No? 2) if generally yes, is it state dependent and 3) if it is general US rules, how? Not California (or such) and not an "assault rifle" if that matters. Thanks.

It is possible to import a firearm. First, it has to be an importable firearm. Then you'll need a C6? to import it for you.

What exactly is it you want to import? Is it available here already, as it'll probably be cheaper to get one here.

You'll have to comply with the importing laws in the U.S plus the exchange rate, very high shipping fees and find an FFL who will receive it. The seller will have to comply with NZ laws. Your best bet is to contact BOTH the ATF and Customs. The ATF will give you their importing rules. Customs will tell you how much duty, etc you'll have to pay.
Likely lots of paperwork, but not impossible. Unless, like MisterPX says, it's not importable. Anything that was sent out of the U.S. under Lend/Lease for example cannot be reimported.

Actually, it isn't that hard to import a rifle into the country provided it meets the "sporting" clause. First you need to find an FFL that will receive the firearm. Any standard 01-FFL can do it. You then need to submit ATF FORM 6 - Part I (5330.3A) to ATF. *IF* they approve the importation, your FFL then presents the approved ATF FORM 6 - Part 1 and a completed ATF FORM 6A to the US Customs Service. He gets the rifle from customs and transfers it to you.
