POLICE SHOOT MAN AFTER M-WAY CRASH

By Steven Corbett

A man was shot by police today after he emerged from a crashed car brandishing what was believed to be a gun.

The shooting happened on the M6 motorway near Wigan early this morning.

Shortly after 3am a car which had been followed by police from the St Helen's area turned onto the motorway and crashed into a safety barrier.

A man in his 20s climbed out of the vehicle and threatened officers with what they believed to be a gun.

A police marksman shot the suspected gunman in the leg. He is now recovering in hospital and his injuries are not thought to be life- threatening.

As a result of the shooting the motorway was closed between junctions 26 and 27, causing rush hour chaos with 10 mile tailbacks in both directions.

Of course, he didn't really have a gun, since those are illegal in Britain. (What is it with these trigger-happy British police, anyway?)

They're trying to get in some target practice for when the 14-16 yos come after them. Since guns are illegal there, finding a suitable firing range for practice is likely impossible.

actually the PCA have now confirmed it was an imitation firearm, before anyone else gets in the sarcastic mood

Maybe that officer needs some more marksmanship training.
Agreed.
If the shooting officer had sufficient reason to believe that the individual was not only armed but was willing and ready to shoot at the responding officers and he subsequently shot the suspect in the leg then he made a bad call. Shooting an armed man in the leg is a good way to get shot yourself.
They were very lucky it was a replica gun.
