Breaking in a new one? Tips?

Hi. Is there anything I should know about firing a new shottie for the first time? Its a Mossberg Model 88 pump.

Any loads I should use or avoid? (Of course I'm using NEW factory rounds, NOT reloads.)

I'm asking because someone told me that I should avoid certain rounds in new guns.

Thanks

As long as you don't use a 3 inch shell in a 2 3/4 chamber, your fine.

IIWY, get a 100 round box of the inexpensive stuff from Wal-Mart and wear it out.

Doc, unless you're a shotgunner of Gizmo's high rank, stick to lighter loads at first. Once you're accustomed to the kick and weight, corrected any probs of fit and form, then go for the gusto.

That's probably what someone tried to tell you.

A new gun will fire any shell of the correct gauge although starting with lighter loads is good advice -- not for the gun but for the shooter. That first 3" mag can be an attention getter if you're not ready for it.
