Best recoil pad to leather-wrap?

I want to go with a leather-covered recoil pad for my current project, and possibly some in the future.

What are the best pads to start with, that can handle some material removal?

Thanks. But, no.

This is more of what I have in mind: https://shootingsportsman.com/leatherpad/
And, a video of Larry Potterfield doing such: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRhfi43bQM8

A leather-wrapped pad, rather than a cuff.

I was hoping for recommendations for the best brand of pads to start with, that can handle being ground down far enough to keep the leather flush with the stock.
The voids in some brands and types of butt pads show through the finished leather wrap.

Thanks for the help, for those of you that chimed in.

For posterity...
I think I'll try a Pachmayr pad, as that's what seems to be the choice of the few people still doing this type of work.

If it doesn't work, I may come back and let you know.
If it does... I may be too busy celebrating to remember.

I think you chose right. My smith acted like they grind easiest. I think that method will leave the leather plus to the stock. I wonder if there is a way to grind it a bit smaller all around?

We were taught how to leather wrap a pad, but I don't remember. Now our stockmaking instructor left to start another school. Thank you Glen for all you tried to teach me.

The project has been postponed.
I was working with a very poorly shaped and inletted stock, hoping I could make it work, but finally reached a breaking point. It was just too screwed up from the outset, and I've set the unfinished stock aside for inlay and checkering practice in the future.

Until I get an new stock/blank in, that project is on hold.
I have no idea how long that will take. I'm not certain what style I want to go with, now. And I'm already 6 months into the wait for two Richards stocks that were supposed to have shipped before the Coronapocalypse. (Even when factoring in the Richards lies about shipping times.)

If you're curious about the stock, there was a short discussion here, before I gave up on it: https://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=605669
