What type of ammo does everyone here like for defensive purposes?

My needs are for 9mm, .45acp and .44mag or special, but I would be interested in hearing your responses for other calibers as well.

I've always be partial to Silvertips but am looking with great interest at the Triton CQ Frangible.

Cheers!

Hello. In 9mm, I use either 115 or 125 gr Triton Hi Vel +P JHPs. In 5" Gov't Models .45acp, I use 230 gr HydraShok, and in .44 Spec for use from my 3" Taurus M431, I use Triton 165 gr QuikShoks. Best.

Currently,

My 9mm is loaded with Triton 115gr +P
My .45 Auto, with Speer Gold Dot 230gr
My .45ACP sixgun with Winchester 230gr Black Talons ('cause they look so cool in that stainless cylinder ;) )
My .44 spl is stoked with Federal 200gr LSWC-HP's
and the .44 Mag is full of Triton 165gr .44 Mag 'lite'.

...since you asked. :)

I use Remington Golden Sabre in my Colt Mustang Pocketlite, 124gr HydraShok in my 9mm defensive pistols, and Fiocchi FMJ in my .32ACP pocket rocket, the Keltec P32. I don't carry any of the .45's defensively, but I have shot HydraShok and Golden Sabre in several of them, just to see if they could handle it without any stoppages.

9mm) my 115g R-P JHP at 1320fps.

45ACP) my 230g Golden Saber at 780fps

44 Magnum) good question. I normally shoot IPSC using a 240g LSWC at 900ish (and that's what would probably be in the cylinder). Haven't figured out yet what's "best".....but I'm leaning towards a R-P 180g JHP at completely stupid velocity (like 1900-2000fps !!)

while it's interesting in a voyeuristic kinda way to find out the ammo other people are stoking into their chambers, i'll refrain and just provide a pointer to use in your final decision:

http://www.firearmstactical.com/ammo_data/ammodata.htm

remember, all we can control for in ammo selection is average expansion, and average penetration. use the data to make those decisions.

note that Remington actually releases their testing data for the Golden Sabre line. Winchester sometimes releases some info. no other manuf does this. hmmm.

All are loaded with Gold Dots:

90gr - .380
124gr - 9mm
165gr - .40

From GA Arms - quality ammo at price that doesn't make me think twice about regularly shooting my carry ammo.

9mm - 124gr federal expanding point fmj or gold dot jhp (default is the federal(BP) 115gr jhp)

.38 - federal 112 gr hyra-shok personal defense

.357 - speer 140gr jhp

.40 - federal 155gr hydra-shok personal defense or gold dot

.44spl - CCI blaser 200gr jhp

.45acp - federal 165gr hydra-shok personal defense

as a rule, i value accuracy over velocity

For 9mm definetly have to go with Winchester Supreme 147gr hollowpoint ammunition.... You cant go wrong with this ammo!!! only bad fall is your looking at paying 15.99 for a box of 20 bullets! Its worth it though. You cant miss and the perp will be hurting!

Agt,

Perhaps a more careful study of actual results (NY and LA PD's) will lead you back on the correct path.

For non-LE application best advice is a high-speed (+P or +P+) 115g JHP.

The 147's are an over-penetrating under-barricade-performing mistake. Some loads can be very accurate, though. BFD.
