Barrel length

My Ruger M77 has a muzzle brake. When measuring the overall barrel length do I include the brake or measure the barrel over all length with the brake off? The brake is threaded onto the barrel and can be taken off. I assume that it is not a part of the over all measurement as the brake is not rifled. Does the brake make a difference for velocity of the bullet?

The barrel would be measured without the brake.

The way I understand it is that if the muzzle brake is PERMANENTLY attached to the barrel it is part of the barrels overall length! Rifled or not. Other wise it is not included in the barrel length.
