assault weapon with a bull barrel

I live in the wonderful state of Maryland where we have assault weapon laws. Generally to buy one there is a 7 day waiting period, back ground check, registration... the works. Any way my friend just bought one from a reputable dealer and they treated his AR-15 as though it was any other rifle, none of the things normally associated with an assault weapon purchase. The dealer said this was because it had a bull barrel. Is this true?

Depends on how the Maryland legislature defined "assault weapon". The issue could be that the rifle had a heavy target barrel without the "assault weapon" features such as bayonet mount and flash suppressor. During the federal AWB, that was a difference. (no more than one off a list of features)
