Arrest for ammo possession?

It's a violation of federal law.

Federal law prohibits ammunition sale or transfer to, and possession by, anyone who:

1. ...
2. ...
3. ...
4. ...
5. ...
6. is an illegal alien,

I guess we can assume it was also part of a criminal enterprise or conspiracy since they were "allegedly" delivering the ammo to a third party who may or may not have committed another crime by delivering it across the border. But it's a lot of assumptions as the article is short on facts.

I guess in the reporter's mind, an "assault rifle bullet" is one of those evil bullets that are much more dangerous than a regular bullet. :p

I'm pretty sure that in Washington, DC, it's a felony to have unregistered ammunition. I have to be careful when I bring my car into the district.

FWIW the pertinent sections of U.S. federal law are 18 USC § 922(d)(5)...
It shall be unlawful for any person to sell or otherwise dispose of any firearm or ammunition to any person knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that such person—
...
(5) who, being an alien—
(A) is illegally or unlawfully in the United States; or
(B) except as provided in subsection (y)(2), has been admitted to the United States under a nonimmigrant visa (as that term is defined in section 101(a)(26) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1101 (a)(26)))...

FWIW a later section of the U.S. Code exempts a legal nonimmigrant visa holder if the person (a) has a hunting license and is using the firearm or ammo for legal sporting purposes, (b) is a foreign gov't official on accredited official business, (c) has been granted a waiver by the Dept of State, or (d) is a LEO from a friendly foreign country on official LE business. However, these exemptions seemingly aren't pertinent here.
