AR-15 Smiths?

Are there any AR-15 smiths out there? I have a sensative question I would like to ask if anyone has an in depth knowledge of the weapon, and what can go wrong if it is built by an amatuer who doesn't know shi# about what he is doing.

Really guys, not me. I know enough to know that I don't know enough to even try this, but a friend of mine has a gun with a very serious flaw.

I have worked on and tested the Military models for the Army and I think I can help. What are your questions:

Patrick,
Although you didn't specify your problem
I'll take a guess. Doubling or full auto operation can be caused by m16 parts or
a chipped disconnect notch on the hammer.
Check your friends parts for these problems
and also compare the rifle to a Colt to see
if any parts are missing.

I have presented several solutions to this problem and would like to know if the problem has been resolved.

To All - Thanks for your time and responses, I appreciate it.

To Harley - Special thanks to your very articulate response and detailed diagrams. I have printed them out and presented them to the owner of the gun, although due to rotating days off, I have not seen him since to see if the suggestions isolated his problem. I should see him at the beginning of the week and will be sure to find out :).

We conducted the tests you described and guess what, you hit the nail on the head. The disconnector was out of whack. He took it to a gun shop for repairs to bring it back to proper functioning. In addition to the disconnector, the smith at the gun store told him the sear was worn.

The gun is now being repaired and should be ready to fire by spring.
