Appraisal of M1A

I've been reducing my collection as of late, trying to pear down the collection to guns that get used most often.
So, I'm thinking of selling my Springfeild M1A Scout. Putting a feeler out to get an idea of a reasonable price. Granted, there is a feeding frenzy on everything semi-auto, but I'm not looking to shaft anyone. However, I do realize these firearms are commanding a premium these days. Trying to get a reasonable appraisal.

The rifle is a retired police patrol rifle and the original stock shows some "trunk rash" but the metal parts are in Very Good condition.
All other parts are also in VG condition...the rifle is a range baby.

I'm thinking of hitting a gunshow next weekend and putting $3500-$4000 on it.

Am I insane?

Not sure exactly what it is worth, but it is an awesome rifle. You're going to miss it if you sell it!

I'm not sure I could give you a price, but I am somewhat surprised you want to sell it at all.

I love my M1A Scout EBR, its a tack driver and I'd be lying if I said I didn't get a kick out of all the tacticooled AR owners who look at it with envy.

No, your not insane. With the recent gun climate you should be able to sell it for your asking price range. I frequently attend shows in PA and can tell you that guns and ammo are bringing big money (double/triple MSRP) for one simple reason -people are paying it.

Would you get $3500-$4000 for it a few months ago? Absolutely not.

Put it on Gunbroker and with a high reserve you will find out what its worth.

A co-worker offered to trade my his 2007 Kawasaki KLR650 for the rifle. I'm not sure if the bike is worth as much as the gun

I'm still deciding whether I'm gonna sell it or not. I may just put it up for $4k and see if I get any bites. At a local gunshow last weekend a dealer was seriously considering buying it for that price. He asked to look at it several times and i could see the wheels spinning....I think he wanted it just for himself.

I saw a used Scout with the factory synthetic stock sell on auction arms for $2500. The gun was not in half the shape yours is in. It was in 85% condition at best.

I have a NIB Scout with the walnut stock I have 4 factory 10 rounders and 3 20 rounders I was offered $3000 and did not sell but I was REAL close. I know I'll never get another and that weighs on me.

I'm with Moby, maybe your M1A doesn't get much use but that doesn't mean you won't miss it one day. It would take something major to get me to sell my M1A for any price. Are you really hurting for cash or do you just want a few extra bucks to throw around?

The fact is that I really don't shoot nearly as much as I used to. And my interests have shifted from modern military style rifles to older surplus and muzzleloaders.
I've been whittling my collection for a few years, and have yet to miss something that I've sold.
The rifle was an investment that I figured I may sell if/when i needed to recoup the funds invested. With the "frenzy" currently upon us, it may be the best time to sell. Also, in the worst case scenario, the future transfer may be very difficult, if not impossible.

Some of the money will go into savings, some will be spent on a long motorcycle tour I've been wanting to do. And at least a little bit will be sent to the NRA-ILA.

Basically, it comes down to changing interests and other hobbies.
