I just got a mod 111 savage in .338 lapua mag. Shot S&B 250 gr hps to sight it in 5 shots 1" + moa at 100 yds good to start with. Got some 250 gr Nosler gold partitions H1000 and started at 10% below starting load from hodgdon, and worked up from there, Now something that has never Hapened to me in 30 years of reloading when I reached the min load I got a stiff bolt lift the rifle has a 1 in 9" twist rate I do not think that should have anything to do with it But? Has any one encountered this situation before? Thanks in advance for any information and happy shooting.

Sorry Guys, this should have said, below max starting load, for Hodgdon and Mid load, I used my Nosler #7 guide and the information from the insert in the bullets said to use data for Partition's every load 10 out of 10 did this at mid range (92 gr)

I had a similar experience with a .308 once.
It turned out the second load was contacting the throat's rifling, driving pressures much higher than was expected.

Yes. With 308 Win though, I don't reload 338 Lap.

Sometimes it happens, a brass/bullet/powder combo just seems to reach pressure sooner than predicted by the manuals.

Did this happen with only one cartridge or more than one? Check your OAL to make sure you're not into the Lands.

Both my 06 and .308 will give me a hard lift every now an then. I know everything is right with the cartridges as I'm very meticulous. I've loaded up to and over max when working up loads and what I'm shooting is well below max, no signs of pressure but a hard lift every now and then. Speck of dirt or unburned powder perhaps.

You started 10% below max and when you reached max you got hard bolt lift?

If that's the case, sure, it's not that terribly uncommon. That's why we don't START at max. You found exactly why load development is what it is.

Brian, I hope you're right. I had to go back and reread his post, I though I read it wrong. "when I reached the min load I got a stiff bolt lift". Hopefully a type "O". I never make those. ;)

Yes, certainly possible but "when I reached", would seem to imply some higher step. Plus, it can't really be "Min" because a 10% reduction is actually still slightly higher than Hodgdon's listed starting load.
Hopefully the OP will return and clarify. ;)
