Updated 1:33 PM ET October 4, 1999

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - An assistant high school principal was shot in the leg Monday as he tried to wrestle a gun from the pocket of a 17-year-old student outside a crowded classroom, officials said.

A single shot rang out in the third-floor hallway of John Bartram High School in impoverished southwest Philadelphia at about 10:15 a.m. EDT. The alleged gunman, armed with a .22 caliber handgun, fled but was arrested a block away by two police officers who had been assigned to the school.

The Philadelphia School District had ordered a walk-through metal detector for the high school, where more than 1,900 students were enrolled. Embarrassed district officials admitted the equipment had been delivered but not installed.

The district also had to withdraw an initial report that a teacher was grazed by a bullet in Monday's shooting.

Police said 61-year-old William Burke, a new appointee who began the school year as an assistant principal on Sept. 7, was summoned to a classroom when a teacher noticed that one of his students had a gun.

Burke called two students out into the hallway and soon found himself struggling with the armed teenager.

"In attempting to recover the weapon from the student, the weapon discharged in the student's pocket. Only one shot to our understanding was fired. No other staff member or student was hit in the altercation," said school spokesman Ricardo Curry.

Police said a second youth may have been involved in the incident, but had no further details.

Burke, described by police as a Vietnam Veteran, was hit in the right thigh and used his necktie as a tourniquet until paramedics arrived. He was later reported to be in good condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Police took the 17-year-old suspect into custody, where he remained while authorities considered whether to charge him as an adult.

"He claims he bought the gun over the summer for protection," said Philadelphia City Police Commissioner John Timoney.

The Bartram shooting is the latest in a long list of violent episodes involving guns at U.S. schools. The deadliest occurred on April 20 in Littleton, Colorado, when two heavily armed students opened fire at Columbine High School, killing 12 students and a teacher before turning their guns on themselves.[/quote]

I'm so sick and tired of this same story happening all over the country that I can't think of anything to say about it.

Utterly disgusted and fed-up with it all. I remain.
