On the rear end of the gas tube, wrap the flat part of the mating surface with a rag and grip with a pair of pliers. Rotate the handguard (I can't remember if it is counterclockwise or clockwise), it will come out once rotated 180 degrees. It may require a bit of force depending on how tightly fit it is.

Installation of the new handguard is simply the reverse.

You should have 2 flat spots on the end of gas tube. Put these into a vise and turn wood either direction. Make sure when reinstalling wood handguard, you have piece completely pushed in or the handguard may break on you. Been there, done that.

If you don't have a vice habdy (like me) I've found that a wrench on the flat spots will give you enough torque (as long as you have a good grip on the wood) to turn the gas port. If you can put the part in a vice and use a wrench, all the easier.
