Ammo question

STAGE 2

I was rooting around my Dad's ammo box to find some plinking ammo and he had an old box of winchester ranger 9mm. Its 147gr. FMJ which is no big deal, but it also says "totally encapsulated bullet" on the box. I've never seen this before so what exactly does this mean?

If i'm not mistaken, it means that the tail of the projectile has no open or visible lead or filler. Most FMJ rounds are open with visible lead in the area where the bullet is pressed into the case.

it means the lead core of the bullet is totally enclosed by a metal jacket, so there is no exposed lead to foul up your barrel.

With typical FMJ the base of the bullet is exposed lead. The hot gases from the powder will put some of the lead into the air. The totally encapsulated has no exposed lead .

Speer sells a line of bullets (and loaded ammo) that are fully jacketed. They are known as Total Metal Jacket (TMJ). (It is a brand name.)
