November issue of American rifleman features a nice review of the Henry side gate. As a recent new owner of this rifle, I would have to agree with their evaluation.

Love my new XLever in 45-70. The new fiber optic sights are just stellar. Haven’t scoped it yet, but the sights have been good. Side gate is very smooth. Great article.

Side gate is very smooth. Great article.

They definitely found the sweet spot with the side gate as it is ultra smooth.
The extra 3/4 lb weight over the Win 94 that I also have/love, Soaks up recoil very nicely. Speaking for myself only, I find the craftsmanship to be at the highest level.

I love the nice touch of the barrel band featuring a sling loop without having to add extras just to put a sling on the rifle. I also noticed that the lever itself is a little wider to accommodate gloves on a hand which is a nice touch.

Henry is at the top of its game with these rifles and also offering the lone ranger lever model in 243, 308 and the 6.5 creedmoor. I certainly wish Marlin under its new ownership great success as competition is good for everyone. I do believe Henry is the new standard in lever action rifle’s and doesn’t have anything to worry about going forward.
