TRENTON, Mo. (AP) - A cannon fired to celebrate touchdowns by the Trenton High School football team went off accidentally, killing a man loading it onto a trailer.
Bud Meek, 41, died Friday after being hit in the chest at close range with the hot gases from the exploding black powder, Coroner Tom Eads said.
The accident happened just after players were cleared from the field because of approaching thunderstorms. Meek's son is a freshman member of the team.
The cannon is usually fired one last time after a game to clear the barrel, said school board president John Holcomb. However, he said that might not have been done Friday because of the rush to clear the field.
The school board may retire the cannon, Holcomb said.

I really feel sorry for this guy, just underscores the point that the moment you feel safe is the same one you need to look up for the falling anvil. Also there is no such thing as a toy weapon.
