AK side mount question...

I have an AK that I wanted to put a Vortex red dot on. I ordered a side mount and received it today. With the way the mount sits I can see the fixed sights. The problem I forsee is the mount is so high that I feel like I need a higher cheek piece. I can't find one for the adjustable stock I have.

Any ideas other than buying a different handguard and mounting it forward? This is for an unconverted Saiga with a T6 intrafuse stock. Do you recommend any cheek pieces? Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance,

A scope that fits neatly to your line of sight when you shoulder the weapon is the best arrangement. One that sits a little high can be a good setup from standing. You just keep your head up and utilize the dot as a snap reference.

There are purpose built red dots for the Kalashnikov. I think Tantal still sells them.

Tantal are the Polish AK rifle variants, correct?
I just searched, because I'm in the market for a scope for my AKM as well, but I couldn't find a Tantal AK scope.

In this case Tantal = "Tantal's Collector's Source": http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/optics1.html

I have a PKA sight (the older one). It sits pretty low, lower than a Cobra or PK-AS, but not low enough to co-witness. All the other Combloc style sights seem to sit very high. I got my PKA on Ebay. Tantal was out last I checked.

I had a similar question a while back. I've always been an iron sight guy myself, I don't trust batteries in the field. But Ive found that the height is something you get used to. With a red dot or holographic (I prefer the latter for an AK) your looking at heads up both eyes open. Its meant for quick target acquisition. Try zeroing it in. If it still feels odd try the receiver cover rails. Just don't get the cheapest one you can find. They have a bad habit of warping.

Any other ideas?

Here is a link for a $10 cheek rest of the T-6 stock http://www.combathunting.com/AR_15_M_16_M4-Collapsible_AR_15_M4_T6_Carbine_Stock_Cheek_Rest.html

For $65+ shipping you could switch out your tapco stock for one of these http://www.krebscustom.com/PartsPages/KalashnikovParts.shtml#SAIGASTOCK I have on on my 5.45x39 saiga and it REALLY gets my cheek high enough to see my scope! These stocks come from the same factory that makes the Russian-made hunting version of the SVD, the 7,62x54R Tiger. The stock is VERY solid and high quality.
