Boy shot in early morning drive-by

A 12-year-old boy was shot early this morning while riding with his father to pick up newspapers for a morning delivery route, according to police. The boy and his 10-year-old brother, who were not identified, were with their father, Tavita Pea, in a Mitsubishi SUV on Karluk Street at about 2:30 a.m. when someone shot at them from a passing SUV.
The boy received multiple gunshot wounds to his leg and torso and was taken by paramedics to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
The shots were apparently fired by a passenger in a passing SUV, who leaned out of the window and shot multiple times at the victim's vehicle with a silver-colored semi-automatic handgun, police said.
The father pulled into the Holiday Gas station on 5th Avenue near Concrete Street to call for help. Both cars were headed north on Karluk.
Police are asking the public for help identifying and locating the suspected shooter, described as a black man in his 20s, wearing a black hat and dark colored polar fleece jacket.
Police: 786-8900. Callers can remain anonymous by calling Anchorage Crimes Stoppers at 561-7867. Callers are eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000 if the informaton they provide leads to the arrest of the person involved.
