airweight nomenclature

It was, essentially, a factory mistake.

It was a group of revolvers destined for either the 442 or 642 Centennial Airweight line in which the surface finish was unsatisfactory.

The guns were apparently taken back, buffed out and refinished, and assembled as 042s.

Some have said that they were originally stamped 642, and that the 6 was overstamped with an 0, but in the case of mine that's not the case. There's no doubt that the 0 is the only number there was.

The specs on the gun are essentially those for the 442, except that the 042s have the serial number laser etched under the topstrap and are not marked AirWeight.

I bought one last year, and I love it to death. It's in my left front pocket in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster right now.
