Advice on a new 22 lr

I need a new 22 lr for hunting. Any suggestions. I just was peeking at buds and I kinda like the savage line dunno. Any good ideas to share

Try them out first in person. Some stores will let you dry fire.

There's not much kick with a .22LR, so the rifle needs to feel right when you shoulder it.

I still like the Ruger 10-22, it's a classic, but there are several that people would call classics.

(Now if you could find a Nylon 66 in really good shape......)

CZ455 American. Probably the highest quality bolt action for the money anywhere. I have owned a couple of Anschutz .22lr and the CZ will shoot right with it. It will easily do sub half inch five shots at 50 yards with good ammo. It has an actual walnut stock with checkering and a pretty nice trigger. I'm not knocking any other brand, I've owned a lot of different rimfire rifles over the years and I shot high end competition for years. For the money there's simply nothing in its class. You can pick one up new for around about a hundred dollars more than a Savage and there's simply no comparison in quality. The Savage will shoot well, but they cut a ton of corners in making the gun. The barrel on the Savage doesn't even have a feed ramp. The Henry's are finished better than the Savage and shoot pretty good. They just don't shoot as well as the CZ does. I shoot an indoor league in the winter and I've often shot perfect scores standing with my CZ. No one else on the league has shot any. Take a look at one.

I don't like them but the Ruger American bolt action is a shooter. I am 22 rifle poor. I used a
10/22 scoped as my serious 22 hunting rifle for years. When 77/22 came out it took the 10/22s place. Those are only scoped 22s I have but have 20 some other good 22s. Anyway
the 77/22 will hold its own against similar rifles that are more expensive and have big reps.
My nephew bought the Ruger American and his buddy bought a Savage BA 22 the same day
The Savage does have a threaded barrel and the Ruger doesn't . The Ruger is a tack driver
at 40yds. The Savage isn't bad but not as good and feels cheap. They are both ugly to me
but American shots right with my 77/22 both with 4x scopes. We always sight 22s at 40yds
the best 0 for random ranges you encounter squirrel hunting.

At this point I’d skip the 455 and pick up a 457 if you want a CZ bolt action. The 457 has a 60 degree bolt throw instead of 90 degree, it’s a shorter bolt pull and the trigger have more adjustments (creep, travel and weight).


A basic Henry is fantastic choice. My wife just inherited her grandfather’s basic Henry that he used for coon hunting for years.

Ruger is good for a bolt action, I like the threaded barrel feature and 10/22 mag compatibility.

Henry is such a good lever rifle for the money tho, I think I'm going to dump my terrible Marlin XT-22 for a Henry. There's just something about a lever action that makes it so endearing and the price is great.

I would have to pitch my vote for a CZ- 455 or new 457. I notice there are still some new 452's at Buds. With the 455 and 457 you can order barrels and switch between .22lr, .22WMR, and .17HMR. I have a couple of the Military Trainer models and an Ultra Lux- they are top notch.

Tough decision. There are tons of good 22's out there so get the one the tickles your fancy and if you're cheap there are plenty in the low $100 area and beyond that the skys the limit.
I have a few bolt action Marlins (model 25 and 983s) and they work great. I picked up a Remington 581 used for $60 and it's my tack driver.

Where as my wife gets a kick out of her rossi single shot. If we had to buy another it would be the Ruger 10/22.

A CZ 452 or 455 is an outstanding 22 bolt rifle, I have a 452 and it is a joy to shoot.
However, for hunting I'd be thinking of a synthetic stock, and perhaps stainless too.
Look at Marlin, Savage and Ruger for a decent hunting .22LR

CZ if you want to spend a few more $$ and Ruger if you want to spend less $$
Side by side, Son's CZ Scout out shot my Ruger nearly 100% of the time. With "best choice ammo", it was close but Ruger still lost.
Son's CZ was about 30% more expensive.

The one BIG negative with the Savage is their lousy magazines. If they would make a change there, they would be a much better choice, IMO.

It isn't just the lousy magazines, there's NO feed ramp on the barrel. I can't believe they cut that corner. You're relying on the shell to come straight off the mag and require perfect alignment with the chamber. Just a poor design.

I ordered and received a Tikka T1X. Scoped it and have been shooting it. Extremely accurate with the right ammo. Light and easy to handle. Easily adjustable trigger.

More accurate than my 39A, BL22, and 9422, and a far better trigger than any of them. I looked at the CZ and Ruger (heavy barrel). The Ruger was the second choice.

Does it have to be a factory brand new? Or used but new to you will do.

I don't know about the former kind. But for the latter kind, I do have a few to recommend.

Henry or a Marlin model 60.

I have both a Henry and a Marlin 60 and I highly recommend both. For me, I am slightly more accurate with the Marlin and it is lighter than the Henry. I have had both of them for years and both have been flawless. The Marlin was $105 when I bought it from Walmart in 2002 and they are now in the $160-170 range. I paid $296 for my Henry at Walmart a few years ago but they now run in the $275-280 range. The walnut stock is nicer on the Henry than the birch (?) stock on the Marlin.

For just a no-nonsense hunting .22, it would be hard to beat the Ruger American Rimfire. Not expensive, very accurate, good barrel sights to use if you don't opt for a scope. I like mine a lot, and it wears a Nikon 4x rimfire scope. CCI standard vel. ammo is first rate in the rifle, too. I also have an old, 60s vintage 10/22 (standard CCIs in that one, too). Another great one. Mag interchangeability in both rifles are a real plus.

Shoot! Get 'em both for a bit over 500 bucks if you do some shopping.
