Yesterday I made it to the range to try out some of the "Factory Second" Federal EFMJ ammo I got at CTD for $14.97/50. As you can see, not much, if any difference between it and premium HST! Also, that neither grouped as tightly as non-plus-P target ammo.
All groups were fired at 7 yds (I know, not much of an accuracy test) with my Walther PPS. The HST group was fired first, followed by the EFMJ group, then the WWB group. The shooting was complicated by the fact that my aging eyes had great difficulty picking up the sights against the black target. I later did much better on a standard white target with black bull and rings.
The results:
Federal 165-gr HST +P
Federal 165-gr EFMJ +P "Factory Second"
Winchester "White Box" 165-gr Target Load
And for comparison, a group I fired with my Ruger LCP with it's atrocious trigger-pull, but with Crimson Trace Laser:
I certainly won't hesitate to buy more of the "factory second" ammo for range use, and substitute standard defensive use.
