A Little Help On A Model 29?

A friend of mine has a S&W model 29-3 in an odd configuration. It has a 6" barrel (+/- a little. He says it is just slightly under 6"), but here's the odd part. It has an adjustable front sight like the silhouette guns that S&W made with the 10 5/8" barrel, a full lug and the cylinder isn't fluted.

I told him that it was either a special order gun or a very good smith did some work on it. I also told him that he could have Roy Jinks send him a letter for a fee telling him how the gun left the factory.

Any ideas?

I guess I should have read a little farther in the Smith and Wesson book. It's a Lew Horton Special by the name of The Classic Hunter. 5,000 were made in 1987.
