9mm Ultra (9x18 police) and 380 ACP (9x17)

Need help:

I bought what I thought was a 380 ACP version of the Walther PP Super. Upon closer inspection - it is a 9x18 Police or 9mm ultra version.

The seller lied to me.

Can I fire 9x17 or 9mm Kurtz rounds through this gun?

Failing that - where can I find reloading supplies for 9mm Ultra as regular ammo is outrageously expensive and rare.

No, no... 9x18 Mak and 9x18 Ultra/police are not the same.. I think ultra is .355 and Mak is .365..

Closer inspection, like reading the caliber designation on the side of the gun?
Oh, dear.

Midway has Fiocchi for $20.49 a box, which ain't bad these days.

I have heard of people shooting .380 in Makarovs, a .380 in a Police would be less sloppy. Which might not be good, a better bullet fit might build pressure and strain unsupported brass more.

Apparently, 9mm Luger dies and a .380 acp shellholder will work just fine.
And either 9x18 Ultra(Police) brass or better yet, for longevity in hot loads, .38 Super Comp brass trimmed down.

Interesting chart at

shows how they all differ. Modern 9mm Police is not the same as pre-WW II Luftwaffe 9mm Ultra, for example, although many current references combine the two (like Fiocchi above.)

Thanks guys.

Anybody know any receipies for the 9mm Ultra? I have a bunch of Unique that I use for 9mm and 380 ACP, and am hoping I can use that for Ultra as well.

I think a heavy .380 load would be a moderate 9mm Police load. If necessary, run it up to what it takes. No reason to load any hotter than you need for reliable function, is there?

Unique should do ok.

Give SOG a call, they used to sell German Geco 9Ultra ammo, boxer primed, for $165/1000. I don't see it in the current flyer, but no harm in trying.

I bought a couple of cases, to keep my PP Super and B76 supplied. Have not reloaded it yet. I may give Lee a call, they can grind a carbide die on a custom basis. 9Ultra is a unique straight-walled case, but as the above thread mentions, some people reload it using tapered cartridge dies, eg. 9 Para.

Walther PP Supers are common in 9Ultra, but rare in 380, I am still looking for one.

This might work for some 9mm Ultra guns, but a Benelli B76 it won't. Ask me how I know. Unless you want to turn down every rim!!!!

I haven't used the 9mm Luger dies, as I haven't gotten enough brass yet to play with.

I overload guns for 10 years and have never been hurt.

But I was working with a printed wiring board designer that took his fiancée to to the range to shoot his Makarov, but bought the wrong ammo, it blew up, and the girl was injured.

He said it was a 9mm.
Maybe he put 9x19mm in it, maybe 9x17mm.
