870 safety

I went shooting this past weekend, and I took my 870 along to shoot some trap. I can hit the targets every so often but I have some trouble with the safety. How do you do it? Do you say pull then push the safety to the the fire position? Or wait till the target is in flight?

I usually leave it off for trap,5pt. Since I do not chamber a round until it's time to shoot, no risk ensues.

Many dedicated trap guns do not HAVE a safety.

My safety is my brain. I trust the ol' noggin much more than a 5 cent piece of plastic.

Always practice the 4 rules and you will be okay.

I don't use a safety for trap. Chambered, low ready, finger outside of guard is what I do.

There's a couple outfits selling a big head safety for the 870, I got one on mine and its a snap to release the safety with the side of your trigger finger as your trigger finger enters the guard. Costs about 12 bucks and takes about 7 or 8 minutes to install.
