Yep.

If you read the article, it's sambar, and they were planted on the island in 1908(?).

yes it is sambar deer. Kinda cool for us local folks though. Dont have to travel a long ways to hunt some exotics. If you read the artical, they are a breed of elk. This is a pic of one taken there.

Species: Sambar Deer
Measurement: 158 4/8 Non-Typical SCI.
Where Taken: Florida - St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge
Hunter: Robert Corder
Outfitter: Self-guided

Story:

St. Vincent Island has a free-ranging population of sambar deer that the National Wildlife Refuge manages and allows to be hunted on a restricted-access basis.

They pick 150 guys to hunt an island over a mile offshore, you do the camping & hunting thing in soft sand, there are rattle snakes behind every tree, and the mosquitoes will eat what the snakes leave. LOL!

I was drawn last year and couldn't go.

I almost regret not going. One of the 3 or 4 Sambar killed could have been mine. ;) The odds are tough but it seems like a fun hunt where you'll enjoy the experience.

and its archery, muzzleloader only. Better practice up if I am gonna stick one of these. OH and the skeeters ARE bad, but its the sand knats that will really eat you up.

I was told that a rich man many years ago owned St. vincent Island and stocked it with exotic animals. The wildlife people managed to kill most of exotic species off, but could not get all the hogs or all of the sambar deer. I have always wanted to make that, but have not yet done so.
