'58 Rem: Pietta vs. Uberti

Shot my c&Bs this weekend.
The Uberti/Cimmaron (1998) is a subtly better piece than my Pietta (1994). Particularly the trigger. No creep and light release. That alone, IMHO, is the reason it is more accurate than the Pietta.

The Uberti has less room behind the trigger guard and bangs my middle knuckle pretty good. But with the accuracy and the sweet trigger, "it hurts so good."

I'm hoping that some internal polishing on the Pietta and stoning its sears will close the accuracy gap.

BTW, my '51 Navy Colt (Pietta) was in action with a shimmed wedge, but knocked out again when its hand spring broke. (Sometimes it amazes me that Wild Bill killed ANYONE with is '51s.);)

A thank-you goes out to whomever on this forum suggested I order a spare hand/spring assembly when I ordered a new wedge for the '51. Both arrived today--so the '51 Navy will, I hope, be back in action tomorrow for some load development. I'm going to start at 17 grains of fffg Kik, and work up to 25 and see what it likes. I'll use cornmeal to bring the ball out to the mouth of the cylinder.

I'll be fitting the hand/spring and wedge tonight using the old parts as a guide. Any suggestions? And thanks.

thanks, hawg...

that's the old wedge in the foto... the new one barely makes it out the other side.

I've got the '51 navy together and ready for a shakedown Sunday.

Like Hawg said don't tap the wedge too hard or not at all. I use the heel of my hand to seat the wedge, if it hurts alot you hit it too hard.
Save your hand it's a new one and the wedge too. The hand can be refitted with a home made spring(feeler guage stock)
Uberti are smooth, nicely finnished, and feel better I my hand than Pietta. But from the first Pietta 1858 Rem I bought from Cabelas, a little deburring, stoning, polishing, and shooting a pietta is usually more accurate than Uberti. Pietta has .440" Lands, .450 Grooves, and .445" Chambers. Uberti has .440" lands, .460" Grooves, and .450" Cambers. That gives you .005" differance in chamber to groove measurement with the Pietta, and a .010" differance in chamber to groove measurement with a Uberti. Now there's the math shoot um' both even bench rest them. You'll see a differance.
I can't choose which one i like the best that's why I have Seven 1858 Rems, 2still on there way here, an 1858 Euroarms Army Police(Navy) .36, and a .31 Pocket Rem. All differant and Like um all best for what they do, are, look like. Even name um.

WOW 7 of em Smokin_Gun?
BTW, my new Pietta 58' with the 5.5" barrel has these measurements:
.440 Lands
.449 Groves
.446 Chambers, between 2 different cylinders.
& she likes a decent load of 30gr. FFFG .457 143gr. ball & just a touch of Bore Butter over the ball, she does not like the wads no matter which brand or type I use.

Like Smokin_Gun said, if you take your time & stone the Pietta you'll be supprised as to how nice it'll shoot for ya, I also have a 23 year old Pietta 58' that is still one of my favorite pieces.

Good luck & have fun shooting.

I guess I got lucky, because my Pietta came out of the box with incredibly smooth action and a light trigger. I was actually looking forward to trying my hand at slicking it up, but I guess I'll have to buy something else to try that on.:)

My 60 Pietta has a nice trigger, no creep. My 58 Pietta has a harder trigger with a little creep but neither is bad. My 58 has .440 lands and .450 grooves with chambers running .449-.450.
My 60 Pietta has .440 lands and .450 grooves with all chambers .450
My 58 was made in 2000 and the 60 in 2007.

Yeah I didn't have to do much in smooting up my new 58' but my older 58' had to have some work on her to get her the way I like it, Also HH I like your 58's chambers & one day I'll get some compound & work on getting mine to .450 "when ever I get the time to do it & now that I know what charge my new one likes I'll just widen up to just below the powder level" a larger ball that'll fill the bore should yield better accuracy "as long as I do my part."
