.45 Colt loads

I've been reloading 45 Colts for a while now using Herco and 300gr XTPs. They shoot great and have low recoil, the only thing is using the XTPS for this is somewhat expensive as I like to keep them for my .454 reloads. I'm wanting a low recoiling load for my mom and girlfriend to try (45 Colt). I got some 250gr LRN bullets the other day and was thinking about loading them to between 700 and 800fps which should be a mild load. The powders I have to choose from...because they are what I have one hand now are Titegroup, Red Dot, and Green Dot. Which would be the best of these powders? I can also go and get other powder so if I did that which might be best for low recoil and low muzzle blast...Trail Boss? Thanks.

I have loaded 6.3 Gr Titegroup under 260 gr bullet that gave me 835 fps. If you drop down to 6 gr you should be about where you want to be. Titegroup is not position sensitive but it is temperature and one of my manuals suggests it not be used below 35 F.

could Titegroup be alittle hot with these bullets? I know the load isnt hot but the bullets are not gas checked so could using Titegroup cause alot of leading?

No at those speeds leading shouldn't be a problem.

For an old 1917 I put 6 gr Unique behind 300 gr cast, and get great groups.


For Ruger Blackhawk or Iver Johnson-Uberti-1873 Colt clone, I do 24 gr H110 250 gr XTP JHP at 1200+ fps.

If you want a really soft recoiling load, I loaded up and shot 7 grains of Trail Boss with a 160 RNFP Oregon bullet last week. About 900 fps.

It was my first attempt at reloading - so that was pretty cool.

It was a very soft recoil. Expect folks to make fun of the way it stinks ...

I've been using Trail Boss also in .45-70 & .45 Colt, it works great for lower recoil.

I tried 5.5 grains of Trail Boss with a 255 grain LFN and thought they were underpowered. They left a lot of soot on the sides of the cases, as if the case did not expand enough. The problem is that the IMR website for TB lists 5.8 grains as max for this load. I'm leary of going over their recommendations, so I went back to Unique.

6.4 gr of Green Dot will give ~800 fps out of a 7.5" bbl and is a very soft and manageable load. I'd highly recommend it.
