45-70 189?

A friend of mine saw an old, old rifle. The only info he grabbed was that it was a 45-70 and a date 189something. He didn't catch the brand. He described it as having a flared out hammer. He also described the round as: Brass about 1 1/2" long and lead also about 1 1/2" long.
Any idea what this is?

.45-70 case is 2.1" long, OAL is about 2.59" for about half an inch of bullet showing out of the brass, so he is not accurately describing a .45-70.
