44 Special at close to 1000fps ???

Has anyone actually chronographed a 44 Special using a 240 gr lead bullet and gotten around 1000fps from a 6" barrel?
If so what load were you using? I don't want to use the famous 17/2400.
I like my body parts and guns. And I don't own a cronograph.
I’m trying to get this velocity with a Smith 624 to use for a pin shoot.

Thank You.

44 spl pin load

44 Spl 240 SWC Unique 5.5

all this from a 6.5 in. 624.
When I settled on a pin load it was _________. Theoretically this is a bit slow for good pin work but very accurate and recoil recovery was excellent. Made for some good runs. And had enough authority to move the pins along.

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The Firing Line, nor the staff of TFL assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.

The load I use is 15 grs. of 2400. This load is completely safe in my MMC converted M-28. The factory 1950 Target 6 1/2 inch barrel does 1050 fps. The bullet is L-429421.

44 Spl Pin Loads and other data

Let me try this again with the cautions in place. Some of these loads are stout enough that you'll want to be sure they are approached cautiously and used only in strong modern firearms. N frame Smiths for example.

Best pin load turned out to be 6.9 of Unique under a 240 LSWC. Also good to go if you have the 245 gr. Keith style bullets (Lyman 429421). Lyman's 46th edition lists this load (with the heavier bullet ) as a factory velocity duplication load and potentially most accurate. I can vouch for the accuracy. The 15.5 gr of 2400 load was published in Guns and Ammo Aug 1990, interestingly enough. It is also a very accurate load. That other 2400 load has been around awhile. It's not a recreational proposition.

Cheers,

Norm
