Really, the best way to get the most for your money and be happy with the purchase, is to get a short list together of pistols you like in that caliber and start scouring the used gun market. You will have what you want and you will save money. I can count on one hand the number of new guns I have ever bought in my entire lifetime.

used cop guns

Used glocks model 22 or 23 if you can find it with two mags and night sights from your local police dept. Here in Oregon they find money for new handguns when its hard to wear out a glock. I recommend a ghost trigger if the trigger is heavy, but some might have good triggers

Hammer fired or striker fired or no preference?

Poly frame or metal frame or no preference?

Compact or full size or no preference?

IMO the SIG P229 is a superb pistol in .40 and I own a couple.

Summit gun broker has some nice used ones right now for $525 or CPO ones are usually available.

For new I have heard a lot of good things about the SIG SP2022 in .40 among others.

Good luck.

Depends on what gun / what platform fits your hands the best....

Least expensive / best gun / best value for the money in .40S&W to me...is the Sig 239. My 2nd place gun would be the Sig 226 ...and 3rd would be a 5" 1911...

What do you want to do with it?

My favorite is the Glock 27, plus a Pearce grip extension for range use and the standard flat-bottom for carry.
I also wouldnt hesitate to use it for SD/HD with that extension, shoots and feels like a G23 to me that way.

The G27 is a great all-purpose little pistol that packs quite a whallop for its size.
If only they'd see fit to make a single stack version... not holding my breath tho.
