357 Mag loads for a 2 1/2" pipe?

I been reading some older threads but still need to ask some questions.

I need some suggestions for 38 & 357 loads?

I have a S&W 686+ and a S&W 640 - both with 2 1/2" pipes. I use them mostly for IDPA matches punching paper targets but also need something I can PRACTICE with for carry.

I currently have on hand some Bluedot, Unique, and IMR 4227.

More importantly, I need to keep my cost low!

So let me hear you suggestions, likes, & dislikes?

I would suggest a load in the moderate .357 mag range from a reputable manual with Unique and 125 grain bullets, or Blue Dot and 158's. Go with what is more accurate and/or close to your sights.

The 4227 will give more flash, and probably enough unburned powder to be a problem.

Bob C, you are right! The 4227 does leave a lot of powder behind. I took some advice from someone to switch my to the Bluedot I was using for my 44 mag loads and use the 4227 for my 44's. I was able to check it out in my own books before making the switch, ....but the Bluedot leaves a little powder unburned too.

What about loads for shooting lead?

What works for jacketed also...

works for lead.

At the risk of lead build up in your barrel, the slower powders give more velocity. Prior to jacketed bullets becoming available in the seventies, all the hot loads were hard cast lead.

Heavy loaded lead bullets are passe, but they still work.
