.338-08 no longer a wildcat!

The current issue of Guns & Ammo says that Federal has legitamized the .338-08! It's called the .338 Federal and comes in three loadings. Sounds like a great hog and bear round!

Yeah, Jim Wilson went on a hunt north of Abilene, Texas, and tried one. He's busily writing an article for Shooting Times...

Well, but wouldn't you have to have both factory ammo AND a factory gun for it to be non-wildcat? But I'm very glad to see that. And what's this '08' you speak of? :) JK.

If I'm not mistaken, it's a .308 case necked up to hold .338 caliber bullets. Should be nice and all the major companies will probably chamber it within a year or two.

.338 Federal

Went to the Federal web site and read up on the .338/.338-08 Federal round. Sounds like Sako will be producing rifle chambered in this round and they will be available about the same time as the cartridge. I shoot the .338-06 and probably wouldn't be interested in this rifle, but I hope it does well. I like to seeing someone come out with a non-magnum caliber for a change.

well here is a link to the article on a factory offering (weatherby mark v) in .330-'06 A-square, which is being discussed in a contemporaneous thread here....most surprising that they're BOTH coming out of wildcat status at the same time:

And I've looked all over the Federal website, and find nothing on this subject.

ok, found it buried:
