308 AR Buffer tubes

So some ar stocks are 308 specific and I assume this is because of the buffer tube (I'm new so if I'm wrong please just correct me) So my question is, can the other ar stocks out there like the magpul ctr etc be used on a 308 ar and just mounted to the buffer tube or does the whole unit need to be designed to work with a 308 ar from the get go?

To use the Magpull CTR you need a AR15 buffer tube with a AR10 buffer spring and one of Slash's short AR10 buffers.
