Would you comsider the 300 altra magnum a barrel burner? I've heard that you can only get roughly 500 rounds through a barrel b4 you have to replace it?

I have a Remington 700 CDL in .300 Remington Ultra Mag and have been shooting it quite heavily over the last few years and can see no unusual throat or other barrel wear. I have looked over my load books and have fired over 2500 rounds through it with high velocity, high pressure loads. No unusual erosion or wear so far. The rifle is very accurate and I would buy it again.

All the stuff I hear about barrel burners is usually based on competition shooters. For hunting purposes, it will take a lot to burn one out. So, unless you are using it to compete with, I wouldn't let the burn out reputation bother me. Other examples of burners are 220 swift, 25-06, 257WBY, and 300WM just to name a few.
