300 AAC Blackout for Deer

Got a little stand my late son's best friend sits me in. Shot a little 5 point this year with my 308. Certainly did the job.

However, longest shooting lane is about 90 yards. I got a 300 BO upper and I am itching to take it our this year. I am trying 2 types of ammo right now. Hornady 110 grain VMax and Sierra 125 grain Gamechanger.

While the VMax is a varmint cartridge and basically fragments, I have read up that folks have had good luck on deer. You also get about another 100 ft lbs of energy over the 125 grain Gamechanger.

But, who does not love a Sierra TGK for deer?

The other reason I am asking is I can get IACC ammo with the 100 VMax for about $13 a box.

Anyway, leaning toward the Sierra, but thought on a Friday afternoon with deer season over, might be a good convo. Debating on reloading as well. Ammo is super cheap, but I am sure I could stretch the 300 BO legs with some handloads.

I would definitely stick with the Sierra. I did well with my handloads when I was messing with the 300BO. If yours is set up for Subs, don't shoot a lot of Supersonics. You'll end up needing to change out gas rings and the buffer spring pretty quick.

It isn't. Have not gotten to getting a suppressor yet. Got a 30-30 for short range hunting, but this little 300 BO is a bit more accurate and just as handy.

110 V-Max will be fine it is what Hornady loads in there deer hunting ammo. However, the one deer I killed with the blackout I shot with 125 grain Match King. It worked very well out of a 7.5" pistol. I shot the deer at about 15 yards from the blind.

What deer hunting ammo? It is listed for SD and Varmints under 50 pounds. Their CX and FTX are the ones listed for medium game like Deer. I'd like to see where you got that info from.

@MarkCO, I guess Hornady has changed it. I went to their website and looked since you posted. When I first purchased my .300 BLK I got a box of Hornady 110 V-Max ammunition that stated it was good for deer back around 2015.

There are also a lot of hunters successfully taking deer for years on the .300 BLK forums with the 110 V-Max. At under 2400 fps at the muzzle and less than 2100 fps at 100 yards at some point a V-Max will not act like a varmint bullet, but a more traditional cup-n-core bullet.

I wouldn't use the V-Max or the TGK at any angle with the .300 BLK. However, slipping either one in the ribcage I'd expect the same results. If you want a bullet that's going to work at any angle, I'd look at mono metal bullets or subsonic expanding bullets in .300 BLK.

Any mono metal bullet designed to expand at 300 blk velocites will give you an advantage over traditionally made bullets.

The Hornady CX is a very good bullet and will work well at the lower velocity window of the 300BO. Barnes TTSX are also very good bullets, but you might want to call Barnes and verify the lower velocity floor for expansion. It is typically in the 2200 fps range. I've shot a lot of game with the TTSX and TSX and can verify, if the impact velocity falls under about 2200 fps, they pencil through with little energy transfer and no expansion.

Barnes TAC-TX 110 & 120 grain bullet will work and expand well at .300 BLK velocites. It is not designed the same as the TSX or TTSX. It's made to provide adequate expansion even at 300 yards from the .300 blk according to Barnes.

Thanks Chad. I really like the Barnes bullets over Hornady, so that gives me some options.

Both the .300 BLK and .350 L will kill a deer just as dead as the "Lots better older cartridges". It's more the person pulling the trigger that decides the outcome of a hunt than the cartridge used.
