270 WIN

I have loaded for a 270 WSM recently and a 270 WIN years ago. I just bought a TC Venture 2 rifle in 270WIN since I was so thoroughly impressed with my TC Venture in 270WSM.

I am posting this here as a feeler to see what powders treat you all the best with 130 grain pills. The only powder I have on hand that is in the ball park for the 270WIN is H-4350. I really want to duplicate Factory 270WIN velocities with a 130 grain bullet. Generally speaking factory rounds are pushing between 3000-3100 FPS. Do you all think I will get there with the H-4350 and be able to fill most of the case? all three of my manuals have that bullet and powder topping out right around 55 grains for charge weight. Later tonight I will see how much 55 grains fills the Winchester Cases I bought.

Powders available locally in that burn rate range are RL19, RL17,RL22, H-4350, IMR-4831.

So, please tell me about your experience with H-4350 in the 270WIN.... Thanks all.

I've got super results with IMR4451, and 130 gen Btips.
Results may vary, of course but it was around 3115 avg, no sign of pressure .

I’ve had pretty good luck so far using Reloader -22 with the 130 SST. Seems like it does good with the 140gn Sierra btsp.

H-4831 and 4831sc are my 270 powders, but H-4350 will work great. And I used IMR4064 for a few years, and it worked great also. The Lyman 49th or 50th will give you all the info you need.

H4350 is my preferred powder for 270 Winchester. My rifle has a 24" barrel, so 3100fps is doable. But I run my 130gr right at 3000fps.

I also ended up with a Remi from 700 ADL in 270 win.

I was able to achieve 3100 fps in a 24 inch barrel with a 130 grain bullet and H-4350. Using the Speer 130 grain BTSP and Sperry's listed max load for that bullet and powder.

10 shot string
Avg 3102 fps
ES 23 fps
SD 7 fps

No pressure signs really. I am going to stop there for my powder charge. And tune this load for harmonics. After 3 rounds this gun opens the groups up. I presume this is due to the pressure points in the fore end. The first three shots are touching on each of 5 groups. Then strings the next two shots to the right by about 1 MOA.

The first two things I am going to do with this rifle are a trigger and stock upgrade.

Over the years, in several .270's, I've tried various powders- RE-17/19;H4895, H-1000, IMR 4064, IMR/H -4350, IMR/H-4831.

I used several bullets as well- Nosler, Speer, Sierra, Hornady, Barnes in 100gr, 130gr, 140r and 150gr.

Most success with H-4831, as you can see: I can't say I often broke 3000 fps with 130gr but I was looking for accuracy, not necessarily speed.

Winchester Model 70 Featherweight, H4831, 60.0gr and only likes the Speer 130gr flat base; will not shoot the 130gr boat tail as well, not any other others

My Original 1968 Remington Model 700 only liked 150gr bullets. Shot enough to get vertical stringing despite free-floating and glas bedding. Sent to Remington when they had a handle in their business and they supplied a better barrel, but to this day, still likes Hornady 150gr Spire with H-4831 56.0gr. at 0.02" seat. It will do well with a 130 SST and H-4350, seated at 0.02".

New Model Remington 700, stainless: H4831 56.0gr with 0.015" seat but only with Hornady 140gr SST

Winchester Model 70 with BOSS- great Accuracy but burned it out. Not unusual to get 1" groups at 200 yds with Hornady 130 SST and H-4831. Had it converted to a 25-06 by Hart

Sako top-of-the line model; I forget which since I sold it. But shot well with Remington 130gr standard bullets using H-4831.

Just goes to show that each rifle has it's preferences. So far, my 270 is far and away most accurate with a recipe consisting of a sufficient charge of Norma N-205 to drive 150 grain Nosler Partition bullets right around 3,000 fps while using Federal cases and CCI-200 primers; the rifle being a Winchester model 70 Classic Sporter from the 1990's with a Walnut stock. I've got some other powders that I am hopeful to try out when I get the right opportunity.

Don't have much experience using Hodgdon smokeless. But I do have a 270 win. With IMR 4350 which ballistically is the same as H I get my 130s bumping 3200 fps at muzzle. Thats 57. trickled into the pan of my RCBS beam scale.

I’ve been reloading for .270win for close to 20 years now. One of the powders I prefer is 4064. Is it the best? No. But it is super versatile. I use it from my .223 bolt actions, .243’s, .270’s, .308’s, and 30-06. Now I personally don’t try to run my bullets wide open either. My .270’s with a Sierra ProHunter 110gr I use for whitetails is running just under 2900fps.

I've had great results for30 years with IMR 4350 and 130 grain Core-Lokt bullets. H4350 is similar, so give it a try.
