260 rem and 6.5 Arisaka: is one powder possible?

Over the past several years, I've been slowly inching my way closer to reloading. I've bought a Hornady reloading book and the dies for 9/40 pistol and for 3 different rifle calibers: 260Rem, 6.5 Arisaka and 7.7 Arisaka. I'm probably not going to do the 7.7 arisaka for some time.

I'm naturally a bit cautious and I want to reduce the odds of mistakes, so I'd like to use one powder for the 260Rem and 6.5 Arisaka. The similar size of the cases makes me hopeful that this is possible.

For the 260 Rem, I intend to use 120 grain fmj and and 120 gr. barnes ttsx and 140 grain sp for the 6.5 Arisaka.

I been trolling the internet, but I haven't yet seen a single powder used for both of these; i suspect that the problem is mine.

Has anyone here reloaded both of these calibers using the same powder?

Hornady's 9th Ed. lists IMR4064 for both these cartridges..... though only for the lighter weight bullets in 260 ......

I've found this powder very versatile, and have used it for everything from 5.56x45 to 30/30 to 7-08 to 270WIN ...... 7 and 8mm Mauser ...... 7.62x54r..... I don't think I own a rifle that I have not burned a bunch of 4064 in.....


Lee's second addition lists it for both cartridges, as well, along with H335 and H380. I've found H335 to be very versatile, as well. Never played with the H380.

Hornady 3rd for the Arisaka, Hodgdon website for the 260.
IMR 3031, 4064, 4320, 4350. H 4895, 380, 4831.
Hodgdon also shows B-LC(2) for both.

As mentioned, IMR4064 is your friend. So is most of the "regular" IMR powders. 4895, etc.
This is out of my old Lyman manual. There's 6.5 Jap data there too if you want it. Pretty much the same IMR powders.

Are people really shooting 180 grain projectiles from a 260 Remington or 6.5 Arisaka? I didn't think that was possible, but that's not really my goal for reloading these rounds.

I was thinking that the 120 gr TTSX from the 260 Remington would be my go-to replacement for my antelope/deer round if Barnes stopped selling it's own vortex brand. My rifle really likes that round.

The 140 sp (hornady flat base) would be my choice for a 6.5 Arisaka bullet, as it's very close to the 139 gr projectile originally shot by that rifle, and if I decided to take it with me to chase deer in timber, it could do the job for sure. In the mean time it is just one fun round to shoot and I would love to be able to do it for less than $2/bang.

Doesn't appear you can buy 180's though. The original 6.5 Jap bullet was a 160 grain RN. Changed before 1910 to a spitzer when Japan was trying to emulate European armies.

probably your best bets are going to be h4895 and IMR4064, those are jack of all trades rifle powders, I use them in everything from 6.5 grendel to 30-06.

My 260 likes 4064 under 100 gr Nosler BTs and R17 under 120 gr Nosler BTs, both near max loads (Nosler published max loads). I used 4064 under the 120's in my first 260 and it shot great. I went to R17 for max velocity.

For your situation, I'd sure try IMR 4064.

I like 4064 under 100gr Partitions and RL-19 for 120-129s in my 260. Best velocity in Hornady 9 for the Arisaka is 4064.

Play your silly word game, any way you look at it the data you supplied is DANGEROUS since the question was about the 6.5 Jap NOT the 7.7 Jap...

It would be stupid not to DELETE or CORRECT...:rolleyes:

I have titled the posts to clarify.

I know political correctness is a bother and for WWII generation the term "Jap" is second nature, but today it is considered racially insensitive along the lines of you-know-what, so please spell out Japanese or use Arisaka before someone orchestrates some kind of s-storm of complaints.
